Aroids Indoors: Light, Mix and Feeding for Stronger Growth

Aroids are some of the most rewarding indoor plants to grow. Monsteras, Philodendrons, Anthuriums, Syngoniums and Epipremnums all bring something different, but they tend to have a few things in common: they like bright conditions, they hate sitting in stale wet mix, and they respond well when the foundations are right.

They also tend to send people down the wrong path.

A leaf droops, growth slows, or a plant starts looking a bit flat, and the first instinct is often to water, fertilise, or repot straight away. Sometimes that helps. Often, it just adds another variable.

That’s why we always come back to the Plant Runner Method: Light -> Water -> Mix -> Feed.

This post is focused mainly on light, mix and feeding, but not because water stops mattering. Quite the opposite. Water still sits right where it always has in the Method. It’s just that with aroids, people often get the clearest results by improving the environment around the roots as well as the input going into them.

Start with light

Light sets the pace for everything that follows.

It affects how much energy your plant has to grow, how quickly it uses water, how fast the potting mix dries, and how much benefit it can get from feeding. If the light is off, the rest usually gets harder to read.

Most aroids do best in bright, indirect light indoors. That usually means a position close to a bright window, with plenty of ambient light through the day, but without long periods of harsh direct sun burning the foliage.

The tricky part is that our eyes are terrible judges of plant light. A room can feel bright to us and still be too dim for steady indoor growth.

That’s where the shadow test comes in handy. Hold your hand near the plant and look at the shadow it casts. If you can see a soft but clear shadow, that’s usually a decent sign there’s enough usable light for many indoor plants. If there’s barely any shadow, the plant is probably getting less light than you think.

For aroids, low light tends to show up as slower growth, smaller leaves, weaker stems, longer gaps between leaves, or a potting mix that stays wet for far too long. That’s often when people assume they’ve got a watering issue, when really the plant just isn’t using moisture at the pace they expect.

So before changing anything else, check the light first.

Water still matters here

Even though this post is centred on light, mix and feeding, water still sits underneath all of it.

In the Method, watering comes after light for a reason. Light influences how quickly a plant uses moisture and how often it will need watering. That matters with aroids because they generally prefer a cycle where moisture is available, but the mix is also allowed to breathe and dry down appropriately.

This is where the pot weight test is one of the best tools you’ve got. Pick the pot up after watering, then again over the next few days as it dries. Over time, you’ll get a feel for the difference between freshly watered, still-moist, and genuinely ready to be watered again.

That’s a much more reliable guide than sticking to a schedule.

With aroids indoors, droopy leaves or slower growth can tempt people to water more often. But if the plant is sitting in lower light or a mix that stays dense and wet for too long, adding more water usually isn’t the fix. It just keeps the root zone in a condition the plant already isn’t enjoying.

So yes, water matters. It always does. But with aroids, it makes the most sense when you’re reading it in context.

Then look at the mix

Once light and watering are being considered properly, the next big piece is the potting mix.

Aroids generally prefer a mix with structure. Something that can hold moisture, but still leave room for air around the roots. Not dense, heavy and compacted. Not bone dry and impossible to manage. Just open enough that the roots can breathe while still having access to moisture.

That balance matters because roots need oxygen as much as they need water.

When a mix stays too dense and wet for too long, the issue is not just “too much water.” It’s that the root zone starts losing the air spaces roots rely on. That can lead to sluggish growth, yellowing, soft stems, and all the usual signs people lump under “overwatering.”

That’s why the right media can make such a difference with aroids indoors.

A more open mix helps create a root environment that is:

  • better aerated
  • less prone to compaction
  • more forgiving between waterings
  • easier to manage in pots indoors

Feed once the foundations are right

Feeding comes last for a reason.

Once the light is good, the watering rhythm is being read properly, and the mix is supporting healthy roots, then feeding can really do its job.

That’s when nutrition starts supporting the plant instead of just being poured into a setup that isn’t working yet.

Aroids are foliage plants. If they're actively growing, they need access to nutrients to support new leaves, stronger stems, root activity and overall vigour. Indoors, they're growing in a limited volume of mix, so over time they will use what's available and benefit from a consistent feeding routine.

What stronger growth actually looks like

When people hear “stronger growth”, they often think bigger leaves overnight.

Usually it’s subtler than that.

With aroids indoors, stronger growth can look like:

  • more consistent leaf size
  • cleaner new growth
  • sturdier stems and petioles
  • roots establishing better after repotting
  • a mix that dries at a more predictable pace
  • a plant that simply feels more stable and easier to read

That last one matters more than people think.

A healthy plant usually feels less confusing. You’re not constantly reacting to symptoms. You’re not changing three things at once. You’re just reading the conditions, making smaller adjustments, and letting the plant do what it’s meant to do.

Keep the Method intact

The easiest mistake with aroids is treating every symptom as a standalone problem.

Slow growth? Add fertiliser.
Droopy leaves? More water.
Yellowing? Repot immediately.

Sometimes those things are part of the answer. But usually, the better move is to zoom out and run the Method properly.

Start with light.
Then assess watering in context.
Then look at whether the mix is helping or hindering the roots.
Then feed once the plant is in a position to use it.

That doesn’t just apply to aroids. It’s the reason the Method works in the first place.

And when you apply it well, aroids stop feeling fussy. They start feeling responsive.

Give them enough light, a root environment with air around it, and feeding at the right time, and you’ll usually see the payoff where it counts: healthier roots, steadier growth, and foliage that looks stronger because the plant actually is.

If your aroid is struggling, don’t start by throwing everything at it. Start with the foundations.
