Aloe Vera: A Care Guide

Aloe vera is one of the few houseplants people buy for a reason other than how it looks. It's been carried around the world and grown in kitchens for centuries, which is part of why nobody's entirely sure where it came from — the Arabian Peninsula is the best answer, but it's been cultivated for so long that its wild range is genuinely hard to pin down.

It also gets misread more than almost anything else on the shelf. It's sold as an easy plant, and it is — but only if you can give it the one thing it actually needs, which is a great deal more light than a typical indoor position provides. Get the light right and an aloe is close to unkillable. Get it wrong and it slowly stretches, flattens out and rots from the base, on a timeline slow enough that most people don't connect the two.

Before you buy: a quick honest note

This wants more light than most windowsills give. Aloe is a full-sun plant from an arid climate, and indoors that translates to the brightest position you have — right at a north or west-facing window, or outside in a sheltered spot for part of the year. A shelf across the room won't do it. If your brightest window is already occupied, buy the aloe second.

As much as you can give it. Right at the brightest window, and it will take some direct sun once acclimatised. Low light is what ruins them.

Water

Let the mix dry through completely, then water thoroughly. The leaves are the reservoir. Judge by weight — dry suits it far better than wet.

Mix

Gritty and sharply drained. Here, water moving through quickly is exactly what you want.

Feed

Barely. Every second watering while it's actively growing — and since you're watering rarely, that's rarely.

Light

Everything else on this page is downstream of light, and with an aloe the gap between what it needs and what a room offers is wider than for almost any other indoor plant.

Give it the brightest position in the house. Directly at a window, not a metre back. It will take a few hours of direct sun quite happily once it's used to it — but move it from a dim corner into full afternoon sun in one go and you'll scorch it, so increase the exposure over a couple of weeks rather than all at once.

What low light does to an aloe is specific and worth recognising early. The leaves stretch, thin out and lose their upright posture, splaying outward until the rosette flattens against the pot. The plant looks like it's opening up. It's reaching. Once a leaf has stretched it stays stretched — you can't fix the leaves you've got, only the ones that come next.

That flattening is also why so many aloes end up rotting. A stretched plant in low light is using very little water, so the same watering habit that suited a bright windowsill drowns it in a dim corner.

The Shadow Test: hold your hand about 10cm above a leaf in the middle of the day, between it and the window. If it casts a defined shadow, there's usable light reaching the plant. If there's barely a shadow at all, the light is too poor — and for an aloe that's not a slow decline, it's the start of the stretch.

Water

Let the mix dry through completely between waterings. Once the pot is light and the root zone has dried out, water thoroughly. Aloes hold their own supply in the leaves — that's what the thick, gel-filled foliage is for — so they're built to ride out dry spells in a way most houseplants aren't.

Aloe tolerates dry far better than it tolerates prolonged wet, and that asymmetry is the most useful thing to know about watering one. It doesn't make dry a virtue — leave one parched for long enough and you'll lose roots. It means that when you're not sure, waiting is the safer mistake.

The Pot Weight Test: water thoroughly, let it drain, then lift the pot. That's your full weight, and it's the reference point for everything after — commit it to your hands rather than your head. Lift it again every so often until you learn how quickly that particular pot loses weight.

Weight is the test because the surface misleads. The top of the mix dries first and fastest, so it can feel dry to the touch while there's still plenty of water sitting further down — which is how people overwater while believing they've checked.

When you do water, water properly — a thorough soak until it runs from the drainage holes, then nothing until the pot is light again. Small frequent sips keep the surface damp and the roots shallow, which is the opposite of what this plant wants. Water the mix rather than deliberately filling the rosette — indoors, water trapped between the leaves can sit there a long time. And empty the drip tray. When growth slows — usually through the cooler months — an aloe indoors uses very little water. Stretching the gap right out then isn't neglect; it's the correct response to a plant that's barely growing.

Mix

Most of our advice about mix is a balancing act — hold moisture, but keep air in there too. An aloe shifts that balance much further toward drainage than anything else in the library.

You still want a mix that takes up water when you irrigate; the roots do need access to it. What you want alongside that is a mix that sheds the excess quickly and gets its air back, because this plant carries its own reserves and doesn't need the pot holding a supply on its behalf.

That means grit, and plenty of it. Most standard indoor mixes hold more water than an aloe needs, and in a cool room they can hold it long enough to rot the roots before the plant has used a fraction of it.

The Finger Probe Test: this one reads the mix, not the watering decision — weight tells you when to water, the finger tells you whether the mix can still do its job. Push your index finger in as far as it'll go. Loose and crumbling apart rather than packed into a dense mass means the structure is still working. Heavy and compacted means it's lost its air. Water running around it rather than soaking in means it's gone hydrophobic. A sour or swampy smell suggests the root zone is staying too wet and poorly aerated — investigate now, not later.

Aloes are happy snug and they'd rather be under-potted than over-potted — a large pot holds a volume of damp mix that a small root system can't work through. Repot when the plant has genuinely filled its pot or thrown enough offsets to crowd itself, not on a schedule. A terracotta pot is worth considering here for the same reason the mix is gritty: it lets moisture leave through the sides as well as the base.

If you're adapting a standard indoor mix instead, cut it heavily with perlite, pumice or scoria; half and half is not too far. Avoid bagged sand — the fine grades sold for general use pack down and close up pore space rather than opening it.

Feed

Aloe is a relatively light feeder. It evolved in poor, thin soil, and excess nitrogen encourages soft, stretched growth — particularly where light is already marginal, which for an indoor aloe it usually is.

Feed lightly while it's actively pushing new growth, and stop when growth slows. If your aloe is stretched and pale, the answer is light, not fertiliser — feeding a stretched plant just grows it faster in the wrong direction.

A dilute complete fertiliser is all this wants — every second watering while the plant is actively growing. Since you're watering an aloe rarely, that adds up to very little across a year.

Harvesting, and what it costs the plant

Plenty of people grow aloe for the gel, so it's worth being straight about the trade-off. An aloe doesn't replace a harvested leaf. New growth comes from the centre of the rosette and pushes outward over time, so cutting an outer leaf permanently removes something the plant spent a season or more building. On a slow-growing indoor specimen, taking a leaf every few weeks will visibly shrink the plant.

If you're going to harvest, take the oldest outer leaves — the lowest, most horizontal ones — and cut cleanly at the base rather than tearing. Take one and let the plant recover before taking another.

One practical thing to know: the clear gel isn't the only thing inside the leaf. Just beneath the skin is a thin layer of yellow latex containing compounds including aloin. It's bitter, it stains, and it irritates some people's skin — so handle freshly cut leaves accordingly.

Propagation

For a houseplant grower, propagation means offsets — not leaf cuttings. Worth saying plainly, because a lot of succulent advice doesn't transfer here: aloe isn't reliably propagated from leaf cuttings. You can take a leaf off an echeveria and grow a new plant from it, but an aloe leaf laid on soil generally just rots. It's one of the more common ways people waste a good leaf.

What aloes do instead is throw pups from the base — small rosettes that appear beside the parent and gradually crowd the pot. Wait until a pup is a reasonable size and has its own roots, then separate it at repotting time. Let the cut surface dry before potting it into the same gritty mix, and hold off watering until it's had a chance to callous.

Common problems

Leaves splaying outward, flattening against the pot: light, almost always. The plant is reaching. Run the Shadow Test, move it to the brightest spot you have, and accept that the stretched leaves stay stretched — the improvement shows in new growth.

Mushy, translucent leaves at the base: rot from too much water, and the most common way aloes die. Stop watering, check the pot weight, and get it out of the mix to look at the roots if the base feels soft. Firm, intact roots can stay and go into fresh gritty mix; black, mushy or collapsing ones should be cut away.

Thin, wrinkled, slightly curled leaves: genuinely dry — the one problem here that's easy to fix. A thorough soak and it'll plump back up within a few days.

White or bleached patches: sunburn, usually after a sudden move into stronger light. Pull it back and reintroduce the sun gradually. The damage doesn't heal.

Reddish or bronze tinge to the leaves: often just sun stress, and not necessarily a problem — plenty of aloes colour up in strong light and look better for it. Worth watching rather than reacting to, unless it comes with shrivelling.

Brown, dry leaf tips: usually long dry spells, sometimes salt build-up in an old mix. Check the watering rhythm first, then the age of the mix.

Common pests

Mealybugs: white cottony clusters tucked deep in the leaf axils where the leaves meet the stem — the tightest part of the rosette and easy to miss on a plant you don't handle much. Part the lower leaves and look right down into the centre. Isolate at the first sign.

Scale: small brown or tan bumps on the leaf surface and undersides, often mistaken for blemishes. They don't move, which is the giveaway.

Why does an aloe breathe at night?

Most plants open the pores on their leaves during the day, taking in carbon dioxide while the light is available to use it. That works fine in a forest. In an arid climate it would be fatal — opening up in the heat of the day means losing water you can't replace.

So aloes do it backwards. The pores stay shut through the day and open at night, when the air is cooler and the humidity higher, and the carbon dioxide taken in overnight is stored chemically until morning. Come daylight the plant seals itself up and runs photosynthesis on the reserve it banked in the dark.

It's called CAM photosynthesis — Crassulacean Acid Metabolism, after the family it was first characterised in — and it's one of the adaptations that lets an aloe conserve water for long stretches while a fern in the same room wilts in three days. The reservoir in those thick leaves is doing plenty of the work too. Between them, they're a reminder of what this plant is actually built for, and why the advice on this page leans so hard toward dry and bright.

Good to know

Pet safety: aloe vera is toxic to cats and dogs. This catches people out, because a plant grown for human use reads as harmless — but chewed leaves cause vomiting, diarrhoea and lethargy. Flowering: aloes do flower — tall spikes of tubular orange or yellow blooms — but it's uncommon indoors. It takes a mature plant and more light than most indoor positions supply — enough to push it into reproductive growth rather than just ticking over. Plants grown outside in a warm climate manage it far more readily.

Naming and lookalikes: there are hundreds of Aloe species and plenty of them get sold loosely as "aloe". Aloe vera is the one with thick, upright, grey-green leaves and soft white teeth along the edges. Gasteria and Haworthia sit nearby on the bench and look similar at a glance, but they're different plants, and many of them cope with lower-light indoor positions better than Aloe vera does.
