How to give your Indoor Plants a fresh start this Spring

With Spring just around the corner, it presents us with the perfect opportunity to revive our indoor plants. Like us, they've probably been a little dormant the past few months - hopefully our Winter Plant Care Guide helped to get them through it.

But now Spring is around the corner, it's time to make some changes. We've got you covered with this weeks blog, so read on!

Our Tips For Spring

1. Adjust Your Watering Schedule

The days are getting longer, and brighter - so your plants are going to start growing with a more vigour. More growth means more water. They would have slowed down over winter so you probably haven't been as active with the ol' watering can, but now if the time to dust things off and step it up again.

How to Nail It:

  • Check the soil on the regular: moisture meters, dip sticks or just the tried and tested finger method. Whatever you choose (and don't worry, we definetly have an opinion on whats best), do it consistently for the first month so you can get an idea on just how thirsty your plants are, then you'll have a better idea on how frequently they need to be watered.
  • Water well, not more: As confusing as this sounds, the basic idea is to make sure you water until you see water coming out the drainage holes at the bottom of the pot. Watering frequently but only a little bit at a time is not going to give enough to drench the roots at the bottom of the pot.
  • Look for signs: Drooping leaves or yellowing foliage? You might be underwatering or overwatering. If the signs are there, check the soil and figure out whats going on.

2. Repot for Growth

Spring time is the perfect time to repot - your plants will be sending out new roots and there is much less chance of them going into shock.

Our Repotting Tips:

If you haven't already checked out our potting up guide, no stress we've got the highlights below.

  • Choose the right pot size: Always only go up one pot size. Potting a small root ball into a large pot will mean extra soil for the water to soak without roots to draw it up, which can lead to root rot.
  • Use a premium potting mix: Need we say more? Use a quality mix when you can. If you need a recommendation or two, we might know a couple of guys....
  • Be gentle with those roots: When working around the rootball, be carefull not to damage the roots and loosen any compacted roots before potting up

Pro Tip: This is the perfect excuse to treat yourself to a stylish new planter that matches your decor. Win-win!

3. Step up that Fertilising Routine

As your plants step out of their winter slumber, they'll be keen for a boost to help support growth brought on from all that new light and warmth. Increasing your fertilising in Spring will help create strong, healthy plants. If you've been using a low NPK organic fertiliser over winter, now is the time to move on to our Liquid Indoor Plant Food.

Fertilising 101

  • Use the right fertiliser: If you're reading this, chances are you're already using the right fertiliser. Look for a complete fertiliser to make sure your plants are getting all  the nutirents they need.
  • Read the label: We didn't spend time creating all those beautiful directions for nothing. Too much fertiliser can damage your plant, so make  sure you dilute properly and feed at the right time. If you need to know more, we've outlined this in more detail here
  • Combine with watering routine: Keep it simple. Fertilising with watering means you'll avoid burning the roots and speed up the nutrient uptake from the plants roots.

4. Prune Away

Over the past season, your plants may have picked up one or two crispy leaves or even just grown a little too much. Pruning before Spring really takes off will help keep your plants looking their best as well as encouraging fresh healthy growth.

Tips for the snips

  • Trim the dead bits:  Use a pair of clean sharp secateurs to remove any yellowing or brown foliage.
  • Shape up: Think about the overall shape of your plant - any overly long or leggy stems to maintain a balanced shape.
  • Encourage that new growth: Don't be scared about cutting back. Spring will bring on new growth and by trimming away leggy stems it will focus the plants energy where its needed most.

5. Let There Be Light

With the new season, you'll start to notice the longer days and more light in the home. You might have shifted the plants for winter but now is the time to think about plant placement and think about which spots in your home will be ideal for the plants with the new light conditions.

Light Guide

  • Follow the sunlight:  Pay attention to the way the sunlight moves throughout your home during the day. Warmer weather brings new light into the home, so you can think about ways youn can take advantage of it.
  • Rotate: Start to rotate your plants to give all sides equal access to the sunlight and promote even growth.
  • Adjust locations if needed: Plants that were moved in winter can now be moved back - some plants might need more or less light now that the sun is more readily available.

Don't forget - too much sunlight can burn the foliage so pay attention during the first few weeks.

6. Spring Clean - and focus on the foliage

Dust can build up on the foliage of your plants which prevent its ability to photosynthesize. Dust free foliage not only look better, but they help your plants thrive.

Cleaning Tips

  • Neem is a plant's best friend: Commercial leaf shine products may seem like a good idea, but natural, non-comodegenic products like Neem Oil won't block your plants pores and give your foliage a beautiful shineat the same time.
  • Spray and Wipe: Use a neem oil to spray your plants foliage and then wipe them down.
  • Shower the little ones: Small plants with tiny foliage might be harder to wipe each leaf down, so stick them in the shower and rinse their foliage that way.

7. Check temp and humidity

With a new season comes warmer weather and larger temperature swings, so ensure your plants are in a consitently warm environment.

What to watch for

  • Avoid Drafts: Keep your plants away from stong air conditioning blasts or chilly open windows at night.
  • Watch the humidity: Condisder grouping plants together or even using a humidifier if the air is too dry.
  • Watch the shock: If you're moving plants outdoors, do it gradually to prevent temperature or light shock. Start with a few hours in the early morning and slowly build up to longer periods.

Spring is an opportunity for fresh starts, and your plants will thank you for the love and attention this season. By adjusting watering schedules, repotting, pruning, fertilising, and tweaking their environment, you’ll set them (and yourself) up for a season of lush new growth.

At the end of the day, plant care doesn’t need to feel intimidating or complicated. It’s about building a relationship with your greenery and discovering joy in their little victories—like that brand-new unfurling leaf. Happy growing! 🌱
